The one who gives, and the one who receives
- She gives a 50-euro voucher, the person falls ill, the date passes, and the owner says it's not his problem
- The voucher is for 180 euros, the bill is 115, and she's told there's no change given
- There's eight euros left on it, and she knows neither where to see it nor how to spend it
- She finds it in a drawer a year and a half later, expired six months ago
- She gave it because she didn't know what to choose, and she feels she gave nothing at all
Average purchase and usage amounts: Global POS, equipped retailers, 2025. 12-month validity, neither exchanged nor refunded: Fnac-Darty e-gift card. Five-year period: Article 2224 of the French Civil Code. No law sets a legal duration for a gift card: five years is a limitation period that can be invoked, not a guaranteed validity.
You decide, step by step, what you hand over
Here's Julie's gift to Sarah, step by step. For each one, say whether it goes through Atlas® or stays as it is today, then run the simulation to see what Julie and Sarah experience.
Julie chooses the amount
On your page, she types 60 euros, writes her little note, and chooses the day it's sent.
Sarah receives it on the right day, or she waits
On the morning of her birthday, a message. Her first name, Julie's note, the amount, and the expiry date.
She uses it over several visits, or she loses track
She gives her first name at the counter, nothing to scan, nothing to take out. The new balance shows before she leaves.
She leaves with a session pass
Ten sessions paid in one go, the eleventh free. This time she's buying for herself.

The day it's given, and the eleven months after
Julie gives Sarah 60 euros for her birthday. Here's what Sarah does with it today, and what she does with it when it all fits in her phone.
Sarah opens the envelope
She opens it with one finger: 60 euros, Julie's note, and a date she can read. The cardboard voucher: a piece of card in a sleeve. Pretty, but she doesn't know what to do with it right away.
Life has moved on
She's been once. There's 38 euros left, on display, and she knows she's coming back. The cardboard voucher: the card has slipped under the papers in the drawer. Sarah has forgotten all about it.
Nobody knows what's left
A message: you have 38 euros left, still valid for eighteen months. She books again. The cardboard voucher: she no longer knows whether anything was left, or how much. She doesn't dare ask.
The date arrives
Sarah has been three times, and spent more than the 60 euros. Julie gives the same thing to her sister. The cardboard voucher: expired. Julie paid 60 euros, you only saw Sarah once, and both of them hold it against you.
Four screens, no account to create. Julie chooses the amount and the day it's sent, Sarah gives her first name at the counter, and the new balance shows before she leaves.
The card and the phone, seen from where she stands
The balance and the date are written large: she sees them without having to ask.
The remainder is spent over several visits, down to the last euro, without having to spend it all at once.
Two years' validity, and a reminder before the end : the date almost never catches anyone out.
A card in euros, valid on everything you offer : VAT is only due when she uses it.
On the back of the card, in small print, and nobody reads it again.
It can't be seen anywhere: at the till, she's told there's no change given.
Neither exchanged nor refunded, and it's legal: no law imposes a minimum duration.
You're the one who says no, and you lose both customers.
Multi-purpose voucher: due on use, none if it lies dormant. Article 256 ter of the French General Tax Code, BOFiP BOI-TVA-CHAMP-10-10-40-50 § 80.
The balance is given at the counter. The card carries an amount, not a service: the price of the day applies.
What the pass and the card bring you
You sell 40 gift cards a year, and 11 euros lie dormant on each one. Showing the balance brings half of it back, and nobody stops at 11 euros.
