He knows he's at 7 out of 10
He has nothing in his pockets, and yet he's counting. His card lives in his phone, found with his number. He doesn't dream of points, but of reaching the end.
At the counter, he's asked for his card
Thomas, twice a week since February
On the tenth, his card lets him know: he leaves with his loaf.
Nothing in his pockets,
he knows where he stands, at a glance.
He says no, and it starts again from zero
- 01You ask for his card, he says no, again. He gets a fresh one stamped
- 02He doesn't know where he stands: he'd have to find the card and count the stamps
- 03He's stopped trying: twenty visits required, he makes six in a year
- 04His points expired before he had time to collect enough
- 05His wallet is full of cards from shops he never sets foot in any more
Only three visits to go. The reward is a country loaf.
In his phoneOn the first day, without doing anything. He's at 4 of 10 by the third visit.
At the startYou decide, step by step, what you hand over
Here are Thomas's visits to you, step by step. For each one, say whether it goes through Atlas® or stays as it is today, then run the simulation to see what Thomas experiences.
He gives his number, just once
At the counter, in ten seconds: his first name and his mobile. No form.
He shows nothing more, or he digs out his card
On later visits, he says his number, or nothing at all if you recognise him.
He checks where he stands, or he knows nothing
A gauge, a number, a sentence: 7 of 10, only three to go before your free loaf.
He gets his reward, for real
On the tenth visit, nothing to claim or prove: it's announced at the counter and handed over.

It's not the tenth visit that decides everything, it's the third
Thomas has been buying his bread from you twice a week since February. Here are the three moments when he drops off, or doesn't.
On the 3rd visit. He gives his number, his card is there with his two visits, and two stamps given free on the first day.
On the 6th visit. He opens his phone while he waits: 7 of 10. Only three to go. It's close, he believes in it, and his week takes shape around you.
On the 10th visit. His card lets him know, and he leaves with his reward.
On the 3rd visit. His card is in his other jacket. He's given a blank one, and last week's two stamps are lost.
On the 6th visit. He can't know where he stands. He assumes he's a long way off, stops counting, and the card ends up at the bottom of his bag.
On the 10th visit. He was owed something, he never claimed it. He no longer even knows which card went with which shop. Nothing happened.
Four seconds at the counter, a number that's always right
The rule fits in one sentence. The reward is given in kind, so at your cost price.
| The trade | The rule | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Bakery | Ten visits, two given free at the start. At the end: a country loaf, 3.20 euros. | €1 cost for €40 taken, that is 2.5% |
| Hair salon | Six visits, one given free at the start. At the end: a deep treatment, 18 euros. | €5 for €330 of visits, that is 1.5% |
| Lunchtime restaurant | Eight lunches, two given free at the start. At the end: dessert and coffee, 9 euros. | €2.50 for €136 of covers, under 2% |
