01What your customer experiences

The message he writes to you at 10 pm

Hello, I'd like to redo my bathroom, can you tell me the price: that's all he knows how to write.

He sends the same message to four firms, because he doesn't know which one will reply.

Two never reply, one replies ten days later, one asks him to call back next week.

After three weeks, he still doesn't know whether his project costs three thousand or fifteen thousand euros.

He no longer dares chase: he feels like the one who's pestering.

Tuesday 10.04 pm

Hello, I'd like to redo my bathroom, can you tell me the price?

Three weeks later

Still nothing. He no longer dares chase.

02Do the sums yourself

You decide, step by step, what you hand over

Here's what Julien experiences when asking for a quote for his bathroom. At each of these steps, say whether the quote is online or via an ordinary form, then run the simulation.

1

He says what he wants to do

Redo it completely, replace the bath with a shower, or just the tiling. He picks a picture, he writes nothing.

He describes what he has

The size, the age of the room, what he wants to keep.

03Julien, 34, the same bathroom, the same Tuesday evening

What he experiences with others, what he experiences with you

Julien knows nothing about building work. He just wants to know what he's getting into before talking to his wife about it.

The ordinary contact form
A white box

Your message, and nothing to tell him what's expected of him.

Three vague lines

He half apologises, and presses Send.

Message received

We'll get back to you. No date, no price range.

Ten days later

He's forgotten who he wrote to, and he doesn't dare chase.

Zero information

The project sleeps for another six months.

The six questions asked in his own language
The size, the condition

What he's keeping, when he wants to start.

Pictures

He chooses rather than writes: he can't pick the wrong word.

The price range

It narrows before his eyes with each answer, he sees where he's heading.

Four minutes

He has a visit on Saturday and he knows what he wants to keep.

The same evening

He talks to his wife about it, with a figure and a date to hand.

04Her journey

Four minutes, one Tuesday evening, and Julien knows what he wants

His answers are what make the quote. Every question asked on his behalf is one less evening call and one wasted visit avoided.

Plumber: where does the current waste pipe run?

Moving a shower two metres means breaking the screed and redoing the fall. The answer separates a two-day job from a week-long one, before the visit even happens.

Electrician: how old is the consumer unit?

Porcelain fuses or circuit breakers, with or without earthing. The answer says straight away whether a full safety upgrade is needed or just three circuits to run.

Painter: are the walls papered or painted?

Stripping, filling and skimming before painting means an extra day per room. The answer avoids a finger-in-the-air range and a quote redone after the fact.

What we won't put in your mouth. A serious quote can't always be priced without seeing the room. The customer sees a range, announced as such, and the visit that will replace it.
